Minimal and barefoot shoes: What really matters

When going barefoot does not fit the moment, good minimal shoes preserve as much natural freedom as possible. The best shoe protects without constantly making itself known.

01

What is a minimal or barefoot shoe?

The terms minimal shoe and barefoot shoe are often used almost interchangeably. Both describe a lightweight shoe that provides protection while preserving mobility, toe space and as much feedback from the ground as practical.

Unlike many traditional shoes, it guides the foot less through rigid soles, narrow shapes or an elevated heel. Toes, arches and ankles can therefore take a more active role in each step.

02

Four features that really count

A good minimal shoe matches the shape of your foot. Brand name and exact sole thickness matter less than space, flexibility and a fit that does not make your toes grip.

  • Wide toe box: Toes can relax and spread.
  • Flexible sole: The shoe can move in several directions.
  • Low or zero drop: Heel and forefoot sit at a similar height.
  • Light and secure: The shoe stays with the foot without squeezing it.
03

Finding the right fit

Leave some air in front of the toes and make sure the bases of the big and little toes are not pressed in from the sides. At the same time, the heel needs enough security that you do not hold the shoe on by gripping with your toes.

Try both shoes while standing and walking. Toes need room without the foot swimming inside. A removable insole is useful for comparing size: stand on it and check that the whole foot rests comfortably within its outline.

04

A relaxed transition to minimal shoes

Less cushioning and stiffness changes how feet and calves work. Wear new minimal shoes on short daily routes first and expand the time gradually. The transition becomes a pleasant development rather than an abrupt switch.

Barefoot sandals are the airiest version. They give the foot plenty of fresh air and toe freedom, and they can be bought ready-made or cut to fit. For much of the year, they are a lovely connection between protection and openness.
